A Tough Luck Story from the 2008 Meet at Townsend
By John Alexander with contributions by Ed Anderson
Ed Anderson of Franklin, KY, has a
Studebaker, a 1947 model that he would like to restore, but he knows that he will not have time to do so while devoting time to all his other projects and to the troublesome necessity of making a living. So, Ed thought, perhaps some Studebaker lover would like to adopt his Studebaker and give it the attention he could not. Where do you find Studebaker lovers? At a Studebaker meet, naturally. So Ed decided he and his 47 Studebaker would make the journey from Franklin, KY, to the Smoky Mountain Studebaker Meet at Townsend to help it find a new home.
Franklin, KY, is north of Nashville, TN, just across the KY border, a fair distance from the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. And the Studebaker, although in fairly good condition, was not driveable; so, both it and Ed would need other transportation. Fortunately, Ed had a truck and a car-hauler trailer that would do the job. So, early Saturday morning, Ed and the Studebaker got settled into their proper places on the truck and trailer and began the long trip. The traffic was so heavy that it seemed as if everyone had decided to accompany them on their journey, and, at times, it was so bad Ed thought it unfair that the Studebaker didn't share the driving chores and let him relax on the trailer.
The heavy traffic and some minor breakdowns, which, fortunately, Ed could fix, made the jouney seem interminable, and Ed and his Studebaker arrived in Townsend too late for the show and display of vehicles and just barely in time for the awards banquet. But he did manage to make the case that his Studebaker needed a new owner who would give it the tender loving care it should have in order to get back on the road and appear in Studebaker meets on its own.
These photos show that the Studebaker is a good candidate for restoration, although it needs quite a bit of work. Ed says that the engine will turn over freely. If you are the person who would like to purchase this Studebaker, get in contact with Ed: Ed Anderson, 207 Fairview Avenue, Franklin, KY 42134, or Ed Anderson, POB 556, Franklin, KY 42135.
